What is Relaxans?
Relaxans or botulinum toxin is a neurotoxin. It suppresses the transmission of nerve stimuli to the muscles. To do this, it attaches itself to the ends of the muscles and paralyses them. Relaxans has been known as an anti-ageing agent for well over twenty years. It is used, among other things, to smooth wrinkles, with expression lines in particular responding well to treatment with botulinum toxin.
How does Relaxans work for migraines?
Botulinum toxin is known to inhibit the transmission of nerve stimuli. This effect can be used in the treatment of migraine. This is because it is precisely the nerve impulses that trigger pain that are blocked by the treatment with Relaxans. For this purpose, Relaxans is injected into the corresponding points on the head and also into the neck. This prevents the nerve impulses involved in the migraine from being transmitted.
Who can be treated with Relaxans for migraine?
At present, Relaxans treatment for migraine is mainly recommended for patients who have had no success with conventional therapies. It has been shown that patients whose pain can be attributed to muscle tension respond well to Relaxans treatment for migraine.
Other important information
The cost of Relaxans treatment for migraine is not covered by health insurance. In the USA and Great Britain, Relaxans has been approved by the authorities for migraine for a long time. Since September 2011, the German drug authority, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM), has now also approved a drug.
